Hi this is John Saboe. In the last episode of Cycling Taiwan Andi and I had taken a rest day in Kenting National Park in Southern Taiwan. It was the perfect time for a break. Just over half-way through our around the island journey. The next stage would take us up the beautiful and rugged East coast.

When you plan your vacation to Nepal whether it’s a trekking adventure through the Himalaya or a cultural visit to see the temples, architecture and amazing diversity of the country your first stop will most likely be the capital, Kathmandu. Within the city lies the largest concentration of hotels, restaurants, and travel/trekking agencies-The Thamel District-or simply Thamel.

When you visit Kathmandu you will see them wandering the streets, usually close to major tourist stops. They are usually dressed in an orange or saffron coloured robe, with an elaborate tikka, coloured marks on their forehead, and always bearded and carrying a metal pail. They are Sadhus-holy men who have renounced all of their worldly possessions on a journey to find moksa-in Hinduism- liberation. They live in temples, like the Pashupatinath Temple here in Kathmandu, the forest and caves.

I started out as usual with a stop in the capital, Kathmandu, arriving just in time for Dipawali, the Hindu Festival of Lights. Whether your Hindu or not pretty much everyone here celebrates Dipawali.

I’ve been here for a few days preparing for a 19 day trek into the Everest and Gokyo regions of Nepal. If you don’t see or hear from me in awhile it’s because I’m out trekking but hoping to give you updates along the way provided there’s connectivity.

It is has been an epic ride cycling the whole island of Taiwan. Locally it’s called a Huan Dao-meaning circle of the island.

We started our ride at the beginning of the week from the east coast city of Yilan, and after 5 days we are basically at the half-way point of a cycle around the island.

I really like Laos and feel this will be the first of many visits. What do I like? For me it’s always the people first, and I really liked the people and their attitude for life. I met some travelers that said they didn’t find the people as friendly as some other countries in Southeast Asia.

I was there to explore mainly the north-which seems to be the center of adventure activities in Laos. One of the highlights was visiting The Gibbon Experience, an adventure company that takes groups into the Bokeo Reserve where they have zip lines and tree houses for viewing and listening to Gibbons.
