I was pleasantly surprised by how different the Gokyo Valley was compared to the popular Khumbu Valley next door and the trek to Everest Base Camp.

The Khumbu offerers unparalleled views of some of the greatest mountains in the world including the highest, Mt. Everest-8848m. Along with that masses of people on the pilgrimage to Everest Base Camp, which has virtually no view of the peak.

On my recent trek of this region I added on an extra few days to include the Gokyo Valley. An amazing trekking region that’s much quieter, peaceful while still offering up some one of a kind views in the Himalaya.

The goal for most is to wake up before dawn and hike the peak of Gokyo Ri near the village of Gokyo in order to catch the sunrise over five 8000+ meter peaks, Everest, Cho Oyu, Makalu, Lhotse, and Kanchenjunga in the far east.

If all you do is make it to the village you’ll be thoroughly satisfied knowing you are one of the few that has gone down the path less traveled to what I would describe as the Shangra La region of Nepal. Filled with gorgeous peaks, pristine turquoise lakes, and a fast track to serenity.
